The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations
Secretariat (NAIMOS) has begun community engagements in illegal mining-prone
areas to strengthen collaboration with local stakeholders and complement
ongoing enforcement operations against galamsey.
The
initiative seeks to build public confidence, address community concerns and
improve intelligence sharing to support efforts to combat illegal mining and
its impact on the environment and livelihoods.
In
a statement issued on Thursday, October 29 and signed by its spokesperson, Paa
Kwesi Schandorf, NAIMOS said the engagements would bring together traditional
authorities, local government officials, opinion leaders and other stakeholders
to promote collective responsibility in tackling the menace.
The
Secretariat stressed that the engagements would not replace its ongoing
enforcement operations but would complement them as part of a broader strategy
to address illegal mining.
The
programme forms part of an approach adopted by the sector minister, Emmanuel
Armah-Kofi Buah, in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of
implementing a comprehensive strategy to combat illegal mining.
The
engagements are being led by NAIMOS Director of Operations, Colonel K. S.
Appiah, and a team from the Secretariat, working closely with traditional
authorities and opinion leaders in selected communities.
NAIMOS said it remained committed to maintaining decisive
enforcement action while deepening partnerships with communities and relevant
institutions to achieve a coordinated and lasting response to illegal mining
nationwide.
The
initiative is expected to strengthen cooperation between enforcement agencies
and affected communities as the government pursues efforts to curb illegal
mining.
