Tensions boiled over during England’s goalless World Cup draw with Ghana after Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz revealed what triggered his furious touchline clash with Jude Bellingham.
The incident erupted just before half-time after Bellingham committed a heavy challenge on Jerome Opoku near the dugout area. Queiroz says his initial intention was to calm the situation and warn the midfielder about the tackle, which he felt could have led to a yellow or even a red card.
However, the Ghana coach claimed the situation escalated after Bellingham reacted angrily, with insults exchanged and both benches becoming involved. England star Morgan Rogers had to hold Bellingham back as tempers flared, while Ghana assistant John Paintsil also stepped in during the heated exchange.
Despite the confrontation, Bellingham went on to deliver a strong performance and was later named man of the match, although he admitted he may not have deserved the award, praising Ghana’s disciplined display in frustrating England throughout the match.
The draw leaves England needing a win in their next group game to secure progression as group leaders.
