A 9-year-old boy tragically drowns at Asokore Mampong a suburb of the Ashanti Region || Macqathylive

A nine-year-old boy, Tawfiq Abdul-Halim, has been found dead in a stream between Sawaba and Asokore Mampong in the Ashanti Region. The child was a pupil of Mahad Islamic School in Asokore Mampong.

Speaking to Citi News on Friday, February 13, the boy’s father, Abdul-Halim Osman, said Tawfiq had gone shepherding with his brother. The brother returned late in the evening to inform the family about the incident. The family immediately reported the matter to the police and began searching for the boy in the stream.

“We made the necessary effort to retrieve the body from the stream, but without success. It was this morning that the boys in the town went to the stream and recovered the body. We have been asked to take the child to the police station before we can bring him home,” he said.

A witness, Abdul Jalil, noted that this is the fourth time in five years that children have drowned in the same stream. He added that children often gather in the area for shepherding and appealed to parents to closely supervise their children.

Police officers have since conveyed the body to the morgue and launched investigations into the incident.

This tragedy follows another drowning in the same municipality last week, when the body of an unidentified young male adult was recovered from the Aboabo drain.
