‘Getting your first hit is the hardest as an Artist’ — Kojo Blak

Afrobeats musician Kojo Blak has opened up about the challenges emerging artistes face in breaking into the music industry, describing the journey to getting a first hit song as the most difficult stage of an artiste’s career.

Speaking on the On The Line podcast, Kojo Blak explained that gaining recognition requires significant effort at the early stages of an artiste’s career as compared to maintaining relevance.

“Getting your first hit is the hardest as an artist. That is where there's more work. When you get people to know you, it becomes a little easier.”

Kojo Blak also shared that he does not see other artistes as competition, explaining that he is more focused on improving his craft and becoming better than he was previously.

“I'm not in competition with anybody. I'm in competition with myself. I want to do better than I did before, even with my live performances but I don't feel pressured.”

He further revealed that the motivation behind his upcoming album is not centred on securing performances during the festive season or appearing on major shows.

“I don't really care about festive seasons. I'm not making the album to go and perform on big shows.”

Kojo Blak is set to release his debut album, which is expected to feature several collaborations.
