62 year old Ghanaian living in the UK charged with food safety violations in Watford || Macqathylive

A 62-year-old Ghanaian chef, Stephen Akuoko, has avoided jail after being convicted of serious food safety violations in Watford, UK.

Operating under “Tribal Foods,” he was found storing fish in a bathtub next to a toilet and using them to prepare ready meals sold illegally in local shops and supermarkets. Authorities also discovered his products had no proper ingredient labels and carried excessively long expiry dates, making them unsafe for consumption.

The case came to light after a fire at his home in October 2024, where firefighters uncovered the unhygienic conditions. Despite promising to stop, he continued supplying unlabelled food to shops, which was later confirmed through CCTV evidence.

At St Albans Crown Court, Akuoko pleaded guilty to food safety offences. The judge described his actions as “disgusting” and a serious risk to public health. He received a two-year suspended prison sentence and a five-year ban from operating any food business.
